Women in Action: Development of Training Sites for Indigenous Women and Young Men in Mwenga
The Women in Action project aims to empower Indigenous women and young men in Mwenga, South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, through the establishment of training sites focused on Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). Supported by Global Affairs Canada and the Paul Gérin-Lajoie Foundation, and implemented by PIFEVA, this project targets the agriculture, agroforestry, and climate-smart restoration sectors.
Key Achievements:
- Identification of 10 Sites: Ten training sites of 2 hectares each have been established in targeted villages, involving 23 participants per site (10 women, 8 girls, and 5 men) to ensure balanced participation.
- Capacity Building: Training has been provided to 10 facilitators to manage these sites and teach climate-smart practices.
Challenges and Opportunities:
- Challenges: Limited access to training resources and maintaining long-term community engagement.
- Opportunities: Skill enhancement for women and youth, promotion of gender equality, and increased climate resilience within communities.
Conclusion
The Women in Action project represents a significant step toward sustainability and inclusion of Indigenous women and young men in climate change initiatives, while strengthening the resilience of their communities.
