COP30: PIFEVA Advocates for Climate Justice for Indigenous Women in the Democratic Republic of Congo
The 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC) was held from November 10 to 21, 2005, in Belém, Brazil, against a backdrop of the worsening climate crisis, the rise of anti-rights movements, and the growing influence of corporations, including within the UNFCCC itself. Civil society, particularly feminist, women's rights, and gender justice movements, mobilized both within the official framework of the UNFCCC and beyond, through organizations and grassroots resistance movements. The NGO PIFEVA (Pillar for Vulnerable Women Active in the Democratic Republic of Congo) joined its voice to those of other Indigenous women's organizations worldwide during COP30 in Belém, Brazil.
Ms. Véronique Bulaya, Coordinator and representative of PIFEVA at COP30, amplified the voice, knowledge, and leadership of Indigenous women and advocated for their continued centrality in climate and biodiversity negotiations. PIFEVA shared its vision and commitment to strengthening alliances to ensure that Indigenous women are not only present in decision-making spaces but also lead efforts to build a fairer and more sustainable future for all.
In light of the above, PIFEVA joined its voice with other Indigenous feminist organizations worldwide to advocate for climate and environmental justice from governments.
PIFEVA also calls on governments and donors to provide structural, multi-year, and flexible funding directly to local, women-led, and Indigenous organizations working at the intersection of climate and gender justice. Allocate resources to feminist funds and to women with proven expertise in supporting local movements and grassroots groups while assuming the associated risks.
At the conclusion of COP30 in Belém, Indigenous women not only strengthened their leadership but also acquired the technical knowledge necessary to participate in international climate negotiations, such as the 62nd session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB62) within the UNFCCC process.
By participating in COP30, PIFEVA is positioning itself as a strategic bridge between these spaces and will ensure that feminist voices, strategies, and solutions are integrated at all levels of climate decision-making.
